tricks/tips to making good photos with a digital camera?

Who kindly joined me, sctv and Lou while the other Angels of the North scurried off to attempt to catch their last busses, metros.
Rather fond of this photo, but when I used a lighting tool to bring forward her face and darken the reflections in the glass it seems to have lost some definition. Any tips?
Cropped it a bit too.
